RESOLUTION is a yearly print magazine that explores the impact of the digital image.

Its first issue Hot Pictures takes on the ecological paradox digital images present us with: they offer novel ways to visually depict environmental destruction and climate change, while their production and circulation simultaneously pollutes and heats up the planet. Prompted by our guest editors Kyveli Mavrokordopoulou and Giacomo Mercuriali, Hot Pictures seeks to inhabit the muddy terrain at the heart of this jarring contradiction.

This issue features a conversation between art historian Caroline A. Jones and artist Matthew C. Wilson, a visual essay by artist Femke Herregraven, an interview with policy advisor Rick Goss, a staged dialogue between art historians Christopher C. Heuer and Francis Klingender, an essay by media theorist Alexander Klose, and a book review by Wan-Yin Chen.

Each issue of RESOLUTION also commissions an artistic work in limited edition. For Hot Pictures, performer Clara Thomine proposes The Towels of the Pole. These black-and-white beach towels force the sunbather to choose their climate impact. Each towel has an ‘albedo value’ of either 0 or 1—is either fully sun-absorbent or fully reflective—allowing you to show off your ecological convictions at the beach.
